Initial assessment usually begins with medical history and physical exam followed by imaging, biopsy and pathology review. Molecular and genetic tests may be used to refine diagnosis or guide therapy. The oncologist explains any additional tests needed and whether a multidisciplinary review is advised.
Systemic options include chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies. Choice of therapy depends on cancer type, stage and the person’s overall condition. During treatment teams monitor side effects, support nutrition and infection prevention, and provide symptom management. Decisions are made together with the patient and the care team.
Bring recent test results, imaging reports, a current medication list and notes on symptoms or concerns. Writing questions in advance helps make consultations more productive. Consider bringing a family member or friend for support and to help remember information.
Some problems require immediate evaluation: severe shortness of breath, sudden confusion or loss of consciousness, uncontrolled bleeding, very high fever, or rapidly worsening pain. In these situations contact emergency services or your local emergency department without delay.
