Common causes and where they come from
Palpable lumps often reflect a range of benign conditions: fatty deposits (lipomas), epidermal or other benign cysts, enlarged lymph nodes from local or systemic inflammation, and vascular or soft‑tissue lesions. Masses can also originate from deeper structures or adjacent organs — for example thyroid nodules in the neck or breast lumps in the chest wall. Malignant tumours are less common but are part of the differential when features suggest a more aggressive process. Location, consistency, mobility and accompanying symptoms help narrow the possibilities.
