What it is and common types
Pauses in breathing during sleep include episodes where airflow either partially or completely stops. The two main types are obstructive events, caused by blockage of the upper airway, and central events, due to reduced or absent respiratory signals from the brain. Both can cause drops in blood oxygen levels and brief awakenings that fragment sleep.
