Common causes
Limited range of motion arises from many mechanisms. Musculoskeletal causes—such as joint wear (degeneration), ligament or tendon injuries and fractures—are common. Nerve-related problems (nerve compression, neuropathy) can restrict movement, as can inflammatory conditions, previous surgeries or long periods of immobility. Pain-related avoidance of movement can further reduce range. In younger people trauma and sports injuries are a frequent cause; degenerative changes become more likely with age.
