Children's Emergency Department

The Children's Emergency Department provides first assessment, stabilization and direction for urgent health concerns in infants and children. Below you will find common reasons families come to the ED, signs that require urgent attention, what to expect on arrival, and practical preparation tips.

When to seek emergency care

Some signs need rapid evaluation. Go to the emergency department or call emergency services if your child has breathing difficulty or turning blue, decreased consciousness or unresponsiveness, severe uncontrolled bleeding, a seizure, major head or other serious trauma, signs of dehydration from persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or if a fever occurs in an infant under three months. This list is not exhaustive—trust your judgment and seek professional help if the child looks seriously unwell.

What happens in the pediatric ED

On arrival, a triage nurse assesses urgency and assigns priority based on symptoms. Vital signs and a focused exam follow; staff may order rapid tests or imaging if needed. The team’s first goal is to stabilize the child, then establish a working diagnosis and decide on observation, further specialty consultation, or discharge with follow-up. Communication is adapted to the child's age and family needs.

Common reasons families visit

Frequent presentations include fever and suspected infection, breathing problems (wheezing, fast breathing), vomiting and diarrhea with fluid loss, injuries from falls or accidents, suspected fractures or dislocations, allergic reactions, poisoning concerns, and seizures. Evaluation varies with the child’s age and accompanying symptoms.

Practical preparation and family guidance

Bring the child's ID and vaccination record if available, a list of current medications, allergy history, and a brief summary of the recent events or injuries. Expect waiting times to reflect triage priorities—more serious cases are seen first. If you believe the situation is life‑threatening, contact emergency services immediately rather than delaying.
