Dehydration in children

Dehydration occurs when a child loses more fluid and salts than they take in. It can follow vomiting, diarrhea, high fever or inadequate fluid intake. Recognizing warning signs early and taking simple precautions usually helps; below are common causes, how to spot mild versus serious signs, prevention tips and guidance on when to seek medical help.

What dehydration is and common causes

Dehydration means the body’s fluid and salt balance has shifted. In children this most often happens with vomiting, diarrhea, fever, heavy sweating or when they drink less than usual. Babies and toddlers are at higher risk because their bodies lose a larger share of water relative to weight.

Early and more severe signs to watch for

Early signs include dry mouth, fewer wet diapers or trips to the toilet, irritability, decreased appetite and reduced tears when crying. More serious signs are very sunken eyes or soft spot in infants, poor skin elasticity, extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking, very dark urine or no urine, and fast breathing or a rapid heartbeat. Any sudden change in behavior or breathing needs urgent attention.

Everyday prevention and care during illness

Prevention focuses on maintaining regular fluid intake. Offer small, frequent sips during illness rather than large amounts at once, continue breastfeeding when appropriate, and protect children from excessive heat by staying in shade and dressing them appropriately. Monitor urine output and behavior closely during illness; consult a clinician for specific advice for young infants or if intake is poor.

When to contact health services or seek emergency care

Seek prompt medical evaluation if the child produces very little or no urine, becomes markedly drowsy or difficult to wake, has persistent vomiting or severe diarrhea, shows bluish lips or cold, mottled skin, or has a seizure. For these serious signs, contact local emergency services or a healthcare provider immediately.
