eGFR Stages: How Is the Result Classified?

eGFR is used to categorize kidney function from G1 to G5; the category alone is not a CKD diagnosis and is interpreted with UACR and chronicity.

What does the test measure?

An estimate of how well the kidneys filter blood, usually calculated from serum creatinine and personal characteristics.

Why is the test ordered?

Used to screen kidney function, classify chronic kidney disease and monitor change over time.

A single low eGFR can occur for acute or chronic reasons; persistence and other markers of kidney damage matter when evaluating CKD.
