Feeding difficulty

Feeding difficulty means having trouble eating or taking in nutrition. It can appear at any age and may involve problems with sucking, chewing, swallowing, poor appetite, vomiting that limits intake, or needing tube feeding. This page gives general information, common causes, warning signs and guidance on which specialists may help. This is not a substitute for medical assessment; seek care for evaluation.

What feeding difficulty looks like

Feeding difficulty can range from mild aversion to food to clear problems such as coughing or choking during meals, repeated vomiting, failure to gain weight, or needing enteral (tube) nutrition. Infants may have poor sucking or not coordinate feeding; older adults can develop swallowing changes. The problem’s pattern and duration are important for assessment.

Common causes and risk factors

There is no single cause. Frequent contributors include swallowing (dysphagia) problems, dental or oral pain, reduced appetite, reflux, neurological conditions, infections, metabolic disorders, medication side effects, psychiatric or behavioural issues, and developmental delays. Groups at higher risk include newborns, infants, people with chronic diseases, and older adults with dental or neurological issues.

When to seek urgent medical help

Seek immediate medical attention if there is sudden inability to swallow, breathing difficulty, high-pitched or absent breathing sounds, frothing at the mouth, loss of consciousness, persistent inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly progressing severe weight loss. In such cases contact emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department.

Evaluation and which specialists to consult

Evaluation may include clinical examination, swallowing studies, imaging and laboratory tests, and a formal nutritional assessment. Depending on the findings, relevant specialists include pediatrics, gastroenterology, otorhinolaryngology (ENT), neurology, geriatrics, dentistry/oral medicine and clinical nutrition. Multidisciplinary assessment is often helpful when causes are multiple.
