About facial swelling

Facial swelling means an observable increase in size in one or more parts of the face. It can be the result of many different processes; below are common causes, the situations that require urgent attention, and which medical specialties may be involved in evaluation and direction.

Common causes of facial swelling

Swelling of the face can arise from infections (sinusitis, dental abscesses, cellulitis), allergic reactions (including angioedema), trauma, dental problems, inflammatory skin conditions and, less commonly, systemic disorders such as heart, kidney or thyroid disease. The location of the swelling — eyelids, cheek, lips, or jaw — and any accompanying symptoms help narrow the possible causes.

When to seek urgent care

Certain signs with facial swelling suggest an urgent problem: difficulty breathing, trouble swallowing or speaking, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, high fever with worsening symptoms, severe pain or altered consciousness. If any of these occur, contact emergency services without delay.

How the condition is evaluated and which specialists may be involved

Initial assessment often happens with primary care or emergency clinicians. Depending on findings, referrals may go to ENT (ear–nose–throat), dental/oral surgery, dermatology, allergy/immunology, infectious diseases, cardiology or nephrology. Evaluation can include physical examination, blood tests, imaging (X‑ray, ultrasound, CT) and, when indicated, allergy testing or cultures.

Preparing for assessment and general precautions

Before an appointment note when the swelling began, whether it developed suddenly, prior similar episodes, associated symptoms (fever, pain, breathing difficulty, rash), and current medications or known allergies. Avoid known triggers when allergy is suspected. Individual diagnostic and treatment decisions are made by healthcare professionals; if emergency signs appear, seek immediate care.
