Common causes and what they may indicate
Frequent causes include yeast infections (eg, Candida), disruption of the normal vaginal bacterial balance, contact dermatitis or irritation from soaps, perfumes or pads, parasitic infestation (such as pubic lice), hormonal changes and some sexually transmitted infections. Itching alone does not identify the cause; accompanying changes in odor, abnormal discharge, pain or visible sores can point toward specific diagnoses.
