How vaginal pain is described
The term covers discomfort arising from the vaginal canal and surrounding tissues. Pain that starts suddenly and is short-lived is considered acute; pain lasting weeks or months is chronic. Quality varies—burning, stinging, sharp or dull—and may occur during intercourse (dyspareunia), while urinating, or at rest. It’s important to distinguish pain originating from the vulva (external genitalia) versus the internal vagina, as this affects evaluation and referral.
