What are uterine contractions and common types?
Uterine contractions come from the muscle layers of the uterus contracting and relaxing. Short, irregular contractions can reflect normal uterine activity; regular, intensifying contractions are characteristic of labor. Common types include menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), ovulation-related twinges, Braxton Hicks (irregular ‘practice’ contractions in pregnancy), true labor contractions, and postpartum involution cramps.
