What is loss of taste and how it develops
Taste loss may be complete (ageusia) or partial (hypogeusia). Taste perception depends on taste buds on the tongue and on the sense of smell; many people who report taste loss actually have an impaired sense of smell. Common issues include reduced perception of basic tastes (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami) and altered taste sensations (dysgeusia or parageusia).
