Common causes of rib pain
Pain around the ribs often stems from musculoskeletal problems — muscle strain, rib bruising, fractures, or costochondritis (inflammation at the rib-cartilage junction). Nerve-related causes such as shingles (Herpes zoster) can produce sharp, localized pain. Conditions affecting organs in the chest or abdomen — for example lung or pleural disease, heart-related pain, or digestive issues — may also be felt in the rib area. Trauma, infections and inflammatory processes are other frequent causes.
