What to Know About Rib Pain

Rib pain can arise at any age and has many possible sources. Below you’ll find common causes, signs that need prompt attention, and guidance on which medical specialties may assess rib or chest-related pain.

Common causes of rib pain

Pain around the ribs often stems from musculoskeletal problems — muscle strain, rib bruising, fractures, or costochondritis (inflammation at the rib-cartilage junction). Nerve-related causes such as shingles (Herpes zoster) can produce sharp, localized pain. Conditions affecting organs in the chest or abdomen — for example lung or pleural disease, heart-related pain, or digestive issues — may also be felt in the rib area. Trauma, infections and inflammatory processes are other frequent causes.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help if pain is sudden and severe or is accompanied by breathing difficulty, a sensation of chest pressure or tightness, pain spreading to the jaw, arm or back, fainting, heavy sweating, or collapse. Also get urgent care for high fever, rapidly worsening pain after a chest injury, or significant shortness of breath. If you have any of these red flags, contact emergency services without delay.

Which specialists may be involved

A primary care physician or family doctor is a common first contact. Depending on the suspected source, you may be referred to Orthopedics and Traumatology, Pulmonology (chest/lungs), Cardiology, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, or Dermatology (for rashes such as shingles). The right referral depends on the clinical assessment.

Examination and possible tests

Your clinician will take a medical history and perform a physical exam to guide testing. Common investigations include chest X-ray or dedicated rib radiographs, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, electrocardiogram (ECG), and blood tests. Tests are selected to clarify the likely cause; results are interpreted by the treating clinician to plan next steps.
