When to notice: developmental milestone signs
Certain speech and language milestones are expected at typical ages (for example cooing and babbling in infancy, single words by around 12–18 months, and simple two‑word phrases by about two years). Families should consider assessment if a child is clearly far behind peers, rarely attempts communication, or shows reduced interest in interacting. Signs that prompt earlier evaluation include limited babbling, poor response to sounds, or difficulties understanding language.
