Common medical and emotional causes
Persistent crying is a symptom with many potential causes rather than a diagnosis. In infants and young children, common contributors include hunger, colic or gas, ear infections, teething and chronic pain sources. In older children and adults, pain syndromes, thyroid or other hormonal imbalances, infections or chronic medical conditions can play a role. Emotional factors such as depression, anxiety or post‑traumatic stress, as well as sleep problems, medication side effects and acute life stressors, may also lead to prolonged crying.
