Common causes and underlying mechanisms
One-sided weakness may result from central nervous system events (ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, transient ischemic attack, multiple sclerosis, seizures with postictal weakness), peripheral nerve or nerve-root problems (radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy), muscle disorders, trauma, or infections. Metabolic disturbances can also lead to transient weakness. Recognizing whether the lesion is central or peripheral is a key step in diagnosis.
