Muscle pain: Symptoms, causes and what to do

Muscle pain (myalgia) can range from a minor ache to severe discomfort and may affect a single area or multiple muscle groups. Causes include overuse, injury, infections and systemic conditions. Below is general information on common causes, what to watch for, self-care basics and when to seek professional assessment.

How muscle pain is felt and classified

Muscle pain can be described as a dull ache, sharp pain, burning or soreness. It may be localized to one muscle or region, or widespread across several areas. Acute muscle pain usually begins within hours to days; pain lasting longer than three months is generally considered chronic and may need broader evaluation.

Common causes

Frequent causes include overuse (for example after exercise), strains and partial tears, blunt trauma, viral infections (which can cause generalized muscle aches), electrolyte imbalances and certain systemic or rheumatic conditions. A focused history and physical exam help narrow likely causes and guide next steps.

When to seek urgent care

Some signs suggest a more serious problem and need prompt assessment. Seek emergency services if there is sudden severe weakness, new difficulty breathing, chest pain, altered consciousness, very high fever with rapidly worsening muscle pain, marked changes in urine output or color, or sudden loss of limb function. These may indicate conditions that require immediate evaluation.

Self-care and which specialty to consult

For mild muscle pain, short-term rest, local cold or warm packs as appropriate, gentle stretching, staying hydrated and ergonomic adjustments can help. If pain limits function, is persistent or accompanied by other worrying signs, start with Primary Care (family medicine). Depending on findings you may be referred to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Orthopedics, Rheumatology or Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology for further assessment.
