Lump / fullness sensation in the throat

A sensation of a lump or persistent fullness in the throat (globus) is common and often not related to a true obstruction. It is described as something stuck or a constant pressure in the throat. Duration, accompanying symptoms and triggers help guide further evaluation.

Common causes

Several factors can cause a lump or fullness sensation. Frequent causes include upper respiratory infections, pharyngitis or tonsillitis; gastroesophageal reflux (acid irritation from the esophagus); enlarged thyroid or thyroid nodules; postnasal drip from nasal or sinus disease; and muscle tension or anxiety-related functional globus. Less commonly, structural lesions or masses are involved.

When to seek urgent care

This symptom is often benign, but certain signs require faster assessment: difficulty breathing, progressive trouble swallowing, sudden change in voice, significant bleeding from the throat, rapid worsening of symptoms, unexplained weight loss or high fever. These findings may need urgent evaluation; if breathing or swallowing are seriously impaired, seek emergency care.

How it’s investigated and who to see

Initial assessment is typically by a family physician or an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist, using medical history and physical exam. ENT may examine the throat and larynx (including flexible laryngoscopy). If reflux is suspected, gastroenterology may evaluate; suspected thyroid problems may prompt an endocrinology referral. Imaging, endoscopy, throat cultures or blood tests can be used selectively. When psychological factors are prominent, psychiatric or psychological support can be helpful.

Self-care and symptom management

Avoiding irritants such as tobacco smoke, excessive alcohol, and very spicy or acidic foods can reduce throat irritation. Staying well hydrated, voice rest when needed, and simple reflux-friendly habits may provide relief. Managing stress and anxiety—through relaxation, counseling or therapy when appropriate—can also lessen functional throat sensations. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a clinician.
