Where and how the pain is felt matters
Pain in this region usually localizes to the lower back or the sides of the trunk (flank). Musculoskeletal pain often increases with movement, changes with posture, and is tender to touch or pressing. Kidney-related pain tends to feel deeper, may be steady or come in waves, and sometimes radiates beneath the ribcage toward the front. The time course—sudden onset, progressively worsening, or long-standing recurrent attacks—helps guide further evaluation.
