Loss of smell

Loss of smell means reduced or absent ability to detect odors. It can affect taste perception and daily activities, and has many possible causes that range from temporary infections to structural or neurological issues.

How loss of smell can present

Smell loss may be complete (anosmia) or partial (hyposmia). Some people report no detectable odors; others notice scents seem faint or distorted. Because smell contributes to flavor, changes in smell often make food taste different even though basic taste sensations remain.

Common causes and typical contexts

Frequent causes include upper respiratory infections (including some viral infections), chronic sinus disease or nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis, head trauma, and age-related decline. Neurological conditions can also affect smell. Sudden onset is often linked to infections or injury, while gradual change may reflect chronic nasal issues or aging.

When to consult and what evaluations are used

If smell loss persists for several weeks, or occurs with other neurological signs, evaluation by an ear–nose–throat (ENT) specialist or neurologist is appropriate. Assessment typically starts with history and nasal examination; clinicians may perform standardized smell tests, nasal endoscopy, and, when indicated, imaging such as CT or MRI. Seek emergency care if severe headache, altered consciousness, breathing difficulty or other acute alarming symptoms occur.

Practical safety and daily adjustments

Because smell helps detect hazards and food spoilage, rely on visual cues, expiration dates, and functioning smoke and gas detectors. Smell loss can affect appetite and enjoyment of food; if this raises concerns about nutrition or weight, discuss them with a healthcare professional. Avoid intentionally sniffing unknown chemicals or unsafe substances when testing smell at home.
