Possible causes
Lip sores can result from a range of causes. Frequent culprits include cold sores (herpes simplex virus), friction or trauma to the lip, contact dermatitis from cosmetics or mouth products, bacterial or fungal infections, nutritional deficiencies, and less commonly benign growths or tumors. Factors such as sun exposure, stress, or temporary immune changes can trigger or worsen lesions. Identifying the exact cause usually requires clinical assessment.
