Common causes of leg pain
Leg pain has many possible causes. Muscle strain and cramps are frequent, especially after overuse. Joint problems such as osteoarthritis and tendon inflammation cause activity-related pain. Nerve-related pain (for example sciatica) often produces burning, shooting or tingling sensations radiating from the lower back into the leg. Vascular issues—superficial or deep vein problems—may be accompanied by swelling and skin color changes and need assessment. Less commonly, bone fractures, infections or systemic rheumatologic conditions can cause leg pain.
