What edema is and how it’s classified
Edema refers to fluid accumulation in tissue spaces. Clinically it can be described as pitting (a temporary indentation remains after pressing) or non‑pitting. It may be local — for example after injury or infection — or systemic, associated with heart, kidney or liver conditions. Whether swelling is sudden or gradual, affects one or both legs, and any accompanying symptoms help guide possible causes.
