Common causes of itchy eyes
Allergic conjunctivitis from pollen, dust, pet dander or cosmetics often causes intense itching. Viral or bacterial conjunctivitis can also itch and usually includes tearing, redness and discharge. Blepharitis— inflammation of the eyelid margin—produces itching and flaking. Dry eye due to reduced tear quality or quantity can create itching and burning. Contact lens wear and poor lens hygiene may irritate the eye. Environmental irritants such as smoke, wind or chlorinated water can also trigger symptoms.
