Itching

Itching (pruritus) is an uncomfortable sensation that triggers the urge to scratch. It can be a temporary, harmless problem or a sign related to skin conditions or systemic disease. Below is general information on likely causes, when specialist referral is often needed, and practical points to consider.

How itching is experienced and accompanying signs

Itching can feel dry, stinging, burning or throbbing. It may be limited to one area or involve the whole body. The skin can show redness, rash, bumps, scaling, crusting or bleeding from scratching. If itching occurs with fatigue, fever, unexplained weight change or appetite changes, a broader medical assessment may be needed.

Common causes of itching

Many factors can cause itching. Frequent categories include primary skin disorders (eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections), allergic reactions (contact dermatitis, hives), parasites or insect infestation, dry skin, systemic conditions (liver, kidney or thyroid disease), hematologic disorders and drug reactions. Age, how long the itching lasts and whether it is localized or generalized help narrow possible causes.

Which specialists evaluate itching

Primary care (family medicine) is usually the first point of contact. Dermatology is the main specialty for skin-related causes. Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology may be involved when parasites or contagious infections are suspected. Allergy and Immunology investigates allergic triggers. When systemic disease is suspected, internal medicine, gastroenterology, nephrology or hematology can be consulted.

When to seek urgent evaluation

Seek immediate medical help if itching begins suddenly and is accompanied by breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, fainting or very high fever. Rapidly spreading rashes, severe bleeding from scratched lesions, or symptoms of severe infection or allergic reaction require emergency care.

Home measures and things to watch for

Short-term relief can come from warm (not hot) showers, avoiding harsh soaps and fragrances, wearing loose cotton clothing and using cool compresses. These measures may ease symptoms but do not replace medical evaluation. If itching persists for weeks, worsens, or affects sleep or daily activities, arrange professional assessment.
