Common causes of inability to walk
Walking problems can result from neurological conditions (for example stroke, spinal cord injury, peripheral neuropathy, or neuromuscular disorders), orthopedic issues (hip, knee or foot fractures, dislocations, severe arthritis or tendon injuries), systemic illnesses (cardiovascular events, metabolic disturbances or severe infections) and, less commonly, functional or psychogenic causes. The pattern (sudden vs progressive), associated symptoms and clinical exam guide the differential diagnosis.
