Common causes and how they affect urination
Several mechanisms can lead to difficulty urinating. In men, benign prostatic enlargement, urethral narrowing, bladder muscle weakness or nerve control problems are frequent contributors. In women, urinary tract infections, pelvic organ prolapse, bladder outlet dysfunction or side effects of some medications can play a role. Systemic conditions such as diabetes and neurological disorders may also change bladder sensation or contractility.
