Common causes and mechanisms
Excess tearing may come from several mechanisms: increased tear production due to irritation (allergens, wind, smoke), inflammation or infection (conjunctivitis), blockage or narrowing of the tear drainage system, eyelid position problems (ectropion, entropion), and contact lens-related irritation. Aging, prior trauma, or facial surgery can affect drainage anatomy.
