Likely causes
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux) is a frequent cause of chest burning. Other digestive causes include gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, esophageal spasm, or hiatal hernia. Musculoskeletal pain from the chest wall or rib muscles can mimic burning. Nerve-related conditions—such as shingles (herpes zoster) or neuropathic pain—may produce burning sensations. Anxiety and panic attacks can also cause or amplify chest burning. Although less common, some heart conditions can begin with similar sensations, which is why assessment is important.
