Common causes of chest tightness
Chest tightness may reflect problems in different body systems. Cardiac causes include angina and other heart-related issues. Respiratory causes can include asthma flare-ups, bronchitis, pneumonia, or pulmonary embolism. Digestive sources include gastroesophageal reflux or esophageal spasm. Musculoskeletal problems such as costochondritis or chest wall strain can produce localized pressure or pain. Anxiety and panic attacks also commonly cause a sensation of tightness and difficulty breathing.
