Common causes
Many factors can fragment sleep. Frequent causes include obstructive sleep apnea or loud snoring, restless legs syndrome, nocturia (nighttime urination), chronic pain, gastro‑oesophageal reflux, anxiety and depression, late caffeine or alcohol use, irregular sleep schedules, and side effects of some medications. Hormonal changes such as menopause, thyroid disorders and certain respiratory illnesses can also contribute.
