Possible causes and affected systems
Multiple systems can cause this sensation. Urinary causes include bladder muscle dysfunction, urethral narrowing or obstruction, and urinary tract infections. In men, enlarged prostate or conditions affecting prostate function are common contributors. Neurological problems (spinal cord or peripheral nerve issues) can disrupt bladder sensation and control. In women, pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction may be involved. Constipation and certain medications can also impair emptying.
