Not sucking or refusing feeds is a common concern for parents of newborns and young infants. Feeding refusal can show in different ways: weak or absent suck, turning away from the breast or bottle, fussiness during feeding, or stopping feeds shortly after starting. Other accompanying signs may include excessive crying, temperature changes, vomiting, visible sores in the mouth, or changes in breathing or skin colour during feeding — these deserve prompt attention.
Many factors can reduce an infant’s ability or willingness to feed. Common causes include nasal congestion, oral thrush or mouth sores, teething discomfort, gastrointestinal upset, systemic infection, prematurity or neurological issues affecting suck–swallow coordination, and problems with latch or feeding technique. In some cases maternal milk supply or flow can also influence feeding behaviour.
Initial assessment is usually by a paediatrician or family physician. Depending on findings, specialists who may be involved include Ear‑Nose‑Throat (ENT) clinicians for nasal or oral problems, neonatology for premature infants, paediatric neurology for suspected coordination issues, infectious disease for suspected systemic infection, and dietetics or paediatric nutrition for growth monitoring. Lactation consultants or breastfeeding counsellors can help with technique and support.
Keep a brief record of feeds, wet diapers and behaviour changes, and report any drop in urine output or weight concerns to a clinician. For non-urgent issues, contact your paediatrician or primary care provider; they can arrange observation, weight checks or referrals. If you are breastfeeding, a lactation consultant may offer practical feeding support and assessment.
