Dribbling urine means leaking or a persistent drop of urine either during voiding or after finishing. It can affect adults of any age and both sexes; identifying the underlying cause helps guide appropriate specialist referral and further tests.
Patients may notice urine leaking after they think they have finished (post‑micturition dribbling), a slow dripping during the stream, or a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. Timing, frequency and what makes it better or worse give clues to the cause.
There is no single cause. Frequent contributors include prostate enlargement and related outlet changes in men, urethral strictures, pelvic floor muscle weakness or discoordination, nerve injury from neurological conditions, urinary tract or bladder infections, and changes after pelvic surgery. Voiding habits and some chronic diseases can also play a role.
Evaluation starts with a focused history and physical examination. Typical investigations include urinalysis and urine culture, bladder ultrasound to measure post‑void residual volume, uroflowmetry to assess stream pattern, and—when indicated—cystoscopy or neurological assessment. Tests are selected based on the clinical picture.
Seek urgent care if symptoms are severe or new with warning signs: inability to pass urine (acute retention), high fever with urinary symptoms, sudden severe abdominal or flank pain, or heavy visible blood in the urine. These situations need prompt medical assessment.
Urology is usually the first specialty to consult. Women may also be referred to gynecology or pelvic‑floor physical therapy; neurological signs warrant neurology review. Practical measures—such as reviewing fluid timing, reducing caffeine and alcohol, and referral for pelvic floor rehabilitation—may help but do not replace individualized medical assessment.
