Decreased number of urinations means producing fewer wet diapers or trips to the toilet than usual, or a noticeably smaller total urine volume. In young children, a drop in wet diaper count together with vomiting or poor feeding increases the chance of dehydration. Below are common causes, what to watch for, and when to get prompt medical help.
Look for fewer toilet visits or a reduced number of wet diapers compared with the child’s or adult’s normal pattern. Pay attention to changes in urine color, strong odor, or pain during urination. In infants, a sustained drop in wet diapers (compared with the child’s baseline) is an important sign that needs evaluation.
Decreased urination can follow not drinking enough fluid, vomiting or diarrhea, fever, urinary tract infections, or reduced kidney function. In infants and small children, urethral or urinary tract blockage is possible. Certain systemic infections or metabolic imbalances and some medications also reduce urine output. Clinicians assess these causes in light of recent symptoms and medical history.
Seek urgent medical attention if there is very little or no urine output; signs of dehydration in infants (dry mouth, sunken soft spot, few or no wet diapers); severe vomiting; high fever; confusion or drowsiness; fainting, very rapid breathing or heart rate; blood in the urine; or very dark urine. In these circumstances, contact emergency services or present to urgent care promptly.
Track toilet frequency, number of wet diapers, fluid intake, and any accompanying symptoms such as vomiting, fever, poor feeding, or behavior change. Bring this information to your primary care provider or pediatrician. Depending on the exam, clinicians may request urine testing, blood tests or imaging to determine the cause and next steps.
