Common causes and referral mechanisms
Pain that reaches the jaw, arm or back is not a single diagnosis. It may result from cardiac causes (for example angina or myocardial ischemia producing referred pain), cervical spine nerve compression, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, muscle or tendon strain, or referred pain from internal organs. Nerve entrapment, inflammation and trauma are also frequent contributors.
