Nasal dryness

Nasal dryness is a frequent complaint often linked to environmental factors, habits or certain medical conditions and medicines. Below are typical causes, practical self-care steps to ease symptoms, and guidance on when to consult a clinician.

What nasal dryness feels like

Nasal dryness occurs when the mucous lining inside the nose loses moisture. Common sensations include dryness, tightness, crusting, mild burning or itch inside the nostrils. Persistent dryness may sometimes cause minor nosebleeds or changes in smell.

Common causes and risk factors

Low indoor humidity (heating or air-conditioning), dry climates, cigarette smoke and chemical irritants can dry nasal mucosa. Overuse of nasal decongestant sprays, frequent nose picking, chronic rhinitis, certain systemic illnesses and some medications may also contribute.

Home care and prevention

Raising ambient humidity with a humidifier or bowls of water, staying well hydrated and avoiding smoke help most people. Saline nasal sprays or water-based gels can lubricate the nose; short steam inhalation provides temporary relief. Avoid aggressive nasal cleaning and chemical irritants.

When to see a doctor and which specialists can help

Mild, short-lived nasal dryness is often managed at home. Seek medical review if dryness is severe, persistent, associated with recurring infections, significant bleeding, pain, or loss of smell. Start with your family physician; Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists evaluate structural or chronic causes. For severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, high fever or other urgent signs, seek emergency care.
