Breast tenderness

Breast tenderness means discomfort or pain in the breasts that often increases with touch, pressure or movement. It is a frequent symptom for many people and is usually not an emergency, but understanding likely causes and when to get evaluated helps ensure timely care when needed.

Common causes

Tenderness may be related to cyclical hormone fluctuations (pre-menstrual), pregnancy and breastfeeding changes, local trauma or pressure (including ill-fitting bras), infections such as mastitis or abscess, benign cysts and fibrocystic breast changes, or side effects of some medications. Skin conditions and localized inflammation can also produce tenderness.

When to seek urgent care

Seek immediate medical attention for sudden, severe breast pain, high fever with breast redness and warmth, rapidly worsening swelling, or widespread skin color change. These signs can indicate infection (abscess), inflammatory conditions, or other acute problems that require prompt evaluation; contact emergency services or urgent care if symptoms are severe.

How evaluation is done and which specialists help

Initial assessment is usually by primary care or obstetrics–gynecology. The clinician will take a history and perform a breast exam. When indicated, imaging such as breast ultrasound or mammography is ordered and referral to breast surgery or radiology may follow. If infection is suspected, infectious disease or surgical teams may be consulted. The choice of tests and referrals depends on age, clinical findings and symptom pattern.

Home measures and monitoring

Supportive measures include wearing a well-fitting supportive bra, using warm or cold compresses for short-term comfort, and avoiding tight clothing or activities that aggravate pain. Cycle-related tenderness often improves with the menstrual cycle; during pregnancy and breastfeeding some sensitivity is expected. If pain persists, a new lump appears, or symptoms change, arrange medical review.
