Bleeding tendency can present in many ways: frequent nosebleeds, gum bleeding, easy bruising, prolonged bleeding after cuts, unusually heavy menstrual bleeding, or blood in stool or urine. Small unexplained skin spots (petechiae or purpura) and bleeding from minor injuries that is hard to control are also typical findings.
Causes range from inherited clotting disorders to low platelet number or function, liver disease, vitamin deficiencies and certain systemic infections. Some medications and supplements (including anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents) can increase bleeding risk. Family history, chronic illnesses and older age can also affect risk.
Urgent assessment is advised for uncontrolled or rapidly worsening bleeding, fainting or severe dizziness, breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe headache, large-volume vomiting or bright red blood in vomit, stool or urine. In these situations, go to the nearest emergency department for prompt assessment.
Initial evaluation is often by primary care or internal medicine. Depending on findings, referrals may be made to hematology (clotting and platelet disorders), general surgery (traumatic or operative bleeding), obstetrics and gynecology (heavy menstrual or pregnancy‑related bleeding), dermatology (skin‑related bleeding) or infectious diseases. Expect blood tests (CBC, coagulation studies) and sometimes imaging; specialists will guide further testing and monitoring.
