Possible causes
A bitter fluid sensation may result from reflux of stomach contents or bile into the esophagus, post‑nasal drip from sinus or airway conditions, dental or oral infections, dry mouth, side effects of some medications, disorders of the liver or bile ducts, or less commonly neurological causes. Eating habits (fatty, spicy foods) and alcohol or tobacco use can contribute. Identifying the cause depends on personal history and clinical examination.
