What sputum is and how it forms
Airway mucosa continuously produces mucus to keep the respiratory tract moist and trap particles. Inflammation, infection, allergenic triggers or inhaled irritants such as tobacco smoke can increase mucus production or change its consistency. Normally cilia and swallowing clear the secretions, but when production is excessive or thicker than usual, sputum is coughed up.
