How discharge characteristics guide evaluation
The color, consistency and odor of anal discharge can suggest different causes. Clear or whitish mucus often points to irritation or chronic inflammation; yellow-green purulent discharge suggests infection; bloody discharge may be caused by trauma, fissures, fistulae or inflammatory bowel disease. These findings are clues but not definitive—clinical evaluation is needed.
