Possible causes and mechanisms
Several different processes can affect consciousness. Direct brain injuries (trauma, stroke, brain infections), metabolic disturbances (low blood sugar, electrolyte imbalances, kidney or liver dysfunction), toxic exposures, severe infections, respiratory or circulatory failure, and side effects of medications may all impair awareness. More common, non‑emergent factors such as severe sleep deprivation, acute anxiety or extreme fatigue can also cause temporary confusion. Identifying the likely mechanism guides urgency and the tests chosen.
