Common imaging methods and when they’re used
Medical imaging includes several techniques suited to different needs. X‑rays are quick and useful for assessing bones and some chest conditions. CT (computed tomography) produces fast, detailed cross‑sectional images for trauma, chest, abdomen and vascular assessment. MRI (magnetic resonance) gives high‑contrast images of soft tissues such as the brain, spine and joints. Ultrasound uses sound waves to visualize organs, blood flow and pregnancies without ionizing radiation. Other modalities—mammography for breast screening, angiography for vessel evaluation and PET‑CT for metabolic assessment—are chosen based on the clinical question and the referring clinician’s guidance.
