What is Nuclear Medicine and which techniques are used?

Nuclear Medicine evaluates organ function by administering trace amounts of radioactive materials (radiotracers) and imaging their distribution. Common techniques include scintigraphy, SPECT (single‑photon emission computed tomography) and PET (positron emission tomography). These tests can show metabolic activity in cancer staging, myocardial perfusion in cardiology, thyroid function, renal clearance and bone or infection involvement. In some cases therapeutic radioisotopes are used; any treatment decisions are made by the responsible physician.

Preparing for your appointment and how the test works

Preparation depends on the specific exam. For example, PET scans often require fasting and good hydration, while other studies may need you to avoid vigorous exercise beforehand. Some medications can affect results, so tell the imaging center about all medicines and supplements before the appointment. Bring photo ID, your referral and any prior imaging to speed registration. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, notify the center in advance—special measures or rescheduling may be advised.

Radiation safety and possible side effects

Radiotracers used in nuclear imaging are typically low dose and chosen so the tracer clears the body over time. Imaging centers follow radiation protection standards to keep exposure as low as reasonably achievable. Minor effects can include brief discomfort at the injection site or short-lived reactions. If you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, a widespread rash or fainting after an injection, seek emergency medical help promptly.

Who refers and how are results used?

Nuclear Medicine tests are commonly ordered by specialists in oncology, cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology and orthopedics. A nuclear medicine physician interprets the images and issues a report describing organ function and findings. That report supports, but does not replace, clinical decisions; the referring clinician integrates results with the overall clinical picture. If an urgent abnormality is found, the imaging team will notify you or the referring team quickly.
