The Medical Microbiology branch examines bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites in clinical samples. What Medical Microbiology does and common tests

Medical Microbiology uses culture, staining and microscopy, antigen and antibody assays, PCR and other molecular techniques to detect and characterise infectious agents. Laboratories also perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing to help guide clinical teams on likely resistance patterns. Which tests are run depends on the specimen type and the clinical question; the treating clinician chooses the appropriate tests in consultation with laboratory staff when needed.

Specimen types, collection and preparation

Typical specimens include blood, urine, sputum, wound or throat swabs, and tissue samples. Proper collection technique, sterile containers and timely transport are essential to preserve sample quality. Some tests have specific preparation requirements (for example, temporary withholding of certain medications may be advised); follow the instructions given by your clinic or the laboratory. If you experience severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek emergency care rather than waiting for routine testing.

Result timing and specialist referrals

Turnaround times vary by method: rapid molecular or antigen tests can return results within hours, while cultures and susceptibility testing may take several days. Results are normally sent to the ordering clinician or care team, who will interpret them together with clinical findings. When results indicate a complex or serious infection, the laboratory can recommend consultation with infectious diseases specialists or other relevant departments for further management and follow-up.

Microbiology labs play a central role in hospital infection prevention, outbreak detection and public-health surveillance. Laboratory findings support decisions about isolation, contact precautions and reporting to public-health authorities when required. Close communication between the lab, infection control teams and treating clinicians helps reduce transmission and coordinate appropriate responses.
