What does the test measure?

ANA checks for antinuclear antibodies in blood.

Why is the test ordered?

ANA is used to support evaluation when lupus or other systemic autoimmune disease is suspected.

Information about a low result

A negative ANA can lower the likelihood of some autoimmune diseases but does not rule out all of them by itself.

Information about a high result

A positive ANA can occur with autoimmune disease but may also be found in healthy people; it is not a diagnosis on its own.

Reference and clinical context

Start with the performing laboratory's reference or decision range, assay method, specimen and reporting unit. A single result usually does not establish a diagnosis on its own.

Sourced reference/decision context for ANA

This is sourced reference or clinical-context information; the user's own laboratory report, assay method and clinical context take priority.

Reference ranges may vary by laboratory, method used, age, sex, pregnancy status, and clinical context. The reference range on your own laboratory report takes precedence.

Interpretation notes

ANA is interpreted with titer, pattern, symptoms and, when needed, more specific autoantibody tests.
