What is a pneumothorax and common causes?
A pneumothorax occurs when air collects in the pleural space, which can allow part or all of a lung to collapse. Causes include blunt or penetrating chest trauma, spontaneous air leaks (which may occur without clear cause), complications of chronic lung disease (for example COPD), and some medical procedures. Risk factors include smoking, underlying lung disease and body habitus patterns seen in primary spontaneous cases.
