How it develops and who is more at risk
When vein valves weaken or are damaged, blood can pool in the legs and raise pressure in the veins. Factors that increase risk include prolonged standing, family history, obesity, pregnancy, older age and a past deep vein thrombosis. Sedentary jobs, lack of regular leg activity and smoking may also contribute.
